CHAPTER EIGHT

After spending a week living above Sugar Beat, Colt was certain that when this was all over, he was never going to eat sweets again. It wasn’t that he didn’t like them. He did. It was not having the ability to go for a run or work off the extra calories in the gym that was driving him crazy.

Then there was Ellie.

That woman was either looking at him like she was planning on sending him to death row or she was going to shove him into a closet and rip off all of his clothes. Of course, he craved the latter. But the chances of her losing the Hannibal Lector vibe she’d been giving off for days, didn’t seem promising.

“Do you have to be so close?” Ellie bumped into him, as she rushed past the counter, carrying a tray of coffees and donuts.

“Yes. I have to keep you safe.”

“You’ve been here for a week and nothing’s happened.”

“That’s a good thing.”

“I guess.”

“You guess?”

“Stop talking to me. I have work to do.” She whipped her head around so fast that her French braid slapped him in the chest.

He swallowed a groan, as he watched her bend over the table to serve customers. That perfectly round bottom of hers had him looking away fast, before there was a party for one showing in his pants.

When she spun around, her eyes tore across him like spikes. “Your leaving would be a gift.”

“Sorry. Not going anywhere, angel.” Colt rested his elbows on the counter, kicking one ankle in front of the other. “I’d like a large coffee, cream with one sugar and an apricot Danish.”

“Are you for real?” Ellie’s mouth dropped open. “Didn’t you just have one an hour ago?”

“Yes. It was delicious, which is why I want another. Would you like to join me?” Colt winked.

“Not on your life, pal. I’d rather dine with a wake of buzzards.” Ellie slapped a Danish on a plate, then shoved his coffee across the counter. “Don’t choke.” She narrowed her pretty, blue eyes at him.

Colt tossed twenty dollars in the tip jar, before grabbing a stool by the window. He tore a hunk out of the pastry, while thinking about that juicy backside of hers and ways he could really put that long braid of hers to use.

“I think she’s warming up to you.” Lizzie strode out of the kitchen and dropped a second Danish on his plate. “We’re both glad you’re here.”

“You might be, but I don’t think the Ice Princess shares your sentiments. Good thing she doesn’t carry a stun gun. I have a feeling that woman would zap me every chance she got.”

“She’s all bark and no bite.” Lizzie laughed.

He wasn’t so sure that was true.

Lizzie pulled out a stool and sat down. “Why did you offer to do this?”

Colt tore off another hunk of pastry and popped it into his mouth, while he racked his brain for an answer Lizzie would buy. No way was he going to admit that he was drawn to Ellie like a moth to a flame.
